Hammers obtain Obiang

West Ham United are thrilled to announce the signing of Spain Under-21 midfielder Pedro Obiang from Sampdoria for an undisclosed fee.

A number of top European clubs were chasing the midfielder, but West Ham have won the race to sign the 23-year-old, who has penned a four-year-deal.

Obiang made 35 appearances for Sampdoria last season and was one of the star performers for the Italian side in Serie A, scoring three goals in 34 league appearances as Il Blucerciati finished seventh to qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

Speaking in his very first interview as a Hammers player, the Spaniard expressed his delight at having signed on the dotted line.

“I’m very happy to have signed," he confirmed. "We have been talking about this for a long time and now I’ve finally got the chance to come here.

“I went on holiday after the season had finished and I was looking forward to receiving that call to tell me where and when to sign for this Club!

“I’m very excited to play in the Premier League. It’s a style of football that will help me to progress as a player and as a person, so it will be very good."

Obiang becomes the first signing under new manager Slaven Bilic and the Hammers' second summer recruit is relishing the chance to play under the Croatian coach.

He continued: “I think Bilic is a manager that can do very well here. I know that he was a West Ham player and he did a very well with the Croatian national team. He is a manager that likes to play good football and I really like that so I am sure that we will get along very well."

The box-to-box midfielder has plenty of experience and the Club are hoping he will go on to become a major force in the Barclays Premier League next season.

Obiang was brought up in Madrid and stated his career playing for local sides CD Avance and AD Naya before moving to Atletico Madrid. But he decided to leave the Spanish club when he was 16 and moved to Sampdoria, where he signed a five-year contract.

He was rewarded for his impressive form when he made his debut against Italian giants Juventus back in 2010 and helped his side come away with a 3-3 draw.

Obiang has since gone on to make 128 league appearances and also has featured in the Europa League where he played his first game against Hungarian side Debrecen in December 2010.

He has plenty of international experience having represented Spain at Under-17 and Under-19 level and also has two caps for the Spain Under-21 side.

Obiang becomes the second major signing of the summer following the arrival of Darren Randolph from Birmingham City.

With the arrival of Slaven Bilic as the new manager this week, the Club are still hopeful they will be able to make several more signings before the new season gets underway.

Pedro Obiang – The first interview

West Ham United’s newest recruit Pedro Obiang is itching to get going in Claret and Blue having put pen to paper on a four-year-deal.

The 23-year-old Spaniard insists these are exciting times for the Hammers, not least as the very first signing under new boss Slaven Bilic.

Incidentally, the ambitious Obiang has already run out at the Boleyn Ground, in a pre-season friendly for Sampdoria last term, but the prospect of doing so for West Ham is an altogether different one.

“It means a lot for me to come here but the most important thing is to start playing and show the fans what I can do,” he told West Ham TV.

“From the moment I signed the contract I’ve been looking forward to playing for this team. We’re obviously on holiday at the moment but it’ll be good to start training and get going.

“I have very big ambitions with this Club. This Club is experiencing very exciting times, a new manager and big projects. That’s why I came here.

“Hopefully we can get through the qualifying rounds of the Europa League, finish the league in the top eight and show that we are a team that can compete against the biggest teams.”

The new Stadium, of course, is pivotal to the Club’s continued progress and, for Obiang, news of another 20,000 supporters is music to his hears.

“I saw a lot of the Stadium during the Olympics. It’s big, which means more supporters. A project like that will change the Club and will move us forward.

“I would tell the fans, keep the passion, as always. I have heard very good things about them and I know they’ll keep supporting the Club as they always do.”

With Bilic soon to take the reins, it is not just Obiang who will start afresh under the Croat, and the box-to-box midfielder is not the least bit fazed by a new manager with new ideas.

“At Sampdoria we changed manager six times in the last six years! Every time that you change manager is a new adventure so it’s an exciting time and I hope to meet him soon.”

A former Spain U21 international, Obiang describes himself as a wholehearted midfielder, but with an eye for a pass too.

“For those who’ve never seen me play, you’ll have to wait and see,” he joked. “I’m a very hard-working player. I like to play good football and give 100 per cent for my team. I like the occasional dribble and to create chances. I'll try to adapt as quickly as possible.”

As for his new surroundings, Obiang is already au fait with two of his fellow Spanish-speaking teammates and has kept one eye on Alex Song too.

He continued: “I know a little bit about them, I came here to play a friendly last season so I have seen most of them.

“I know of players like Mauro Zarate and Enner Valencia and I’ve looked closely at Alex Song because we play in the same position.

“They made a very good start to the season but obviously my focus has been on my own game, so I’ve not yet had the chance to follow them too much.”

Obiang is a player quite similar to Behrami.
Obviously will need to adapt to the faster pace of premiership but he has qualities and there is no Allardyce.

I have a ouija board and I have channelled the spirit of Benito Mussilini and Pope Pius X and they both reckon Obiang is 'senape'.

Good enough for me.

No reply from fordstar in how many matches he's watched Obiang play in then? Thankfully, I didn't hold my breath.

Davers - Ah, so he was a YOOF player 6 years ago at Athletico, so that would clealry explain why a season ticket holder would know a lot about him. Thanks for clearing that up.

I love the 10 facts about him. Makes him sound a shrewd signing. I see some stats sites are suggesting we've got ourselves a bargain as well. Very encouraging.

If you haven't seen him in action like me though, don't watch that YouTube montage because it's almost as if it's a joke. He doesn't do anything decent for over a minute and a half. It's made up of little clips like him running around, without the ball. Then when he has it he gives it away loads. Worst montage ever!

Re: Official: Welcome Pedro Obiang Confirmed
Don't watch Serie A so don't know Mr Obiang but understand he had an underwhelming highlights package on YouTube
I'm guessing he is athletic and a worker which will help Kouyate and add the movement we often lack in there.
Obviously we need a passer and a bit of creativity ... Cabaye or someone similar would be excellent.

That 'crossed hammers' is starting to get a bit cheesy
I don't like at at all !

I feel the opposite, not getting old! No other club has a symbol so easily replicated by a player, surprised it hasn't been done earlier- can't remember anyone doing it before Tevez?
